Violence and Revolution: does violent revolution "work"? When does

Instructions

  1. Consider the record of armed insurgency and revolution. Where has armed insurgency been used? Where has it led to more democratic regimes? Where has it led to more authoritarian regimes? Where has it "failed"? Has its rate of success increased or decreased over the last half century or more? Try to give a comprehensive picture - while specific cases are useful, you may wish to use the UCDP/PRIO data on armed conflict in the world for a broader look at armed insurgency in the last half century.
  2. What are the conditions under which armed insurgency has "worked" as a form of contentious politics? Are these conditions disappearing in today's world? Are non-violent forms of regime change more likely to "work" in today's world? Why or why not?
  3. Consider also the "normative" aspect of the question: even if violent insurrection "works," would it be justified?
  4. Use maps, charts, graphs, or other visual aids if possible - this is a wiki, not an essay!
