Based on what we know about regime change and revolution, what are the chances that economic and political sanctions can help democratize a non-democratic regime?

Instructions

  1. You need to consider what the various theories of regime change and revolution we have considered in this course say about democratization and revolution. What factors help countries democratize? Given this, what kinds of impact can other countries have in this process?
  2. Consider also the empirical record of sanctions as a tool of democratization. Where have sanctions been employed? Where has their use been followed by democratization? You may wish to try to set up a comprehensive list.
  3. Finally, it is important to consider the normative aspects of this question: even if sanctions did work, would other countries (including especially Western powers) be justified in using them to push for democratization?

Resources

  1. Some of the articles tagged sanctions in our course bibliography might be useful starting points for research on this topic, though the list is very far from extensive.
